Back in 2008, then state exco in charge of the environment Elizabeth Wong was gung-ho about banning the use of polystyrene food containers used by hawkers. Most people welcome this new initiative. A more environmental friendly food container was introduced. However, Wong sthopped short of introducing a policy to control the use of polystyrene containers used to keep fish fresh during transportation. This is despite the fact that both containers used for hawker food and the fish mongers are made from the same material. The lack of a comprehensive policy is what makes the early initiatives by Wong a failure today. Even her successor, Jamaliah Jamaluddin has yet to make news about her attempts to push for a greener environment.
