ANATOMY OF A COMPLAINT


IN our community chat group, we received a report on Feb 12, 2024 from a resident saying that part of the slope beside Jalan Puri, the road leading to Perdana Puri and Damai Puri at Desa Aman Puri had collapsed. 






Only One Access Road

No thanks to the Townplanners at Majlis Perbandaran Selayang, there is ONLY ONE ACCESS ROAD to both housing developments on the hilltop. Naturally, the residents were concerned that if nothing is done to fix the damage, the whole slope may collapse and cut off the access road. 

No emergency vehicle will be able to enter into the area should there be an emergency. The townplanners who approved the project in the past should be made responsible for this oversight. Was there corruption involved? 

All Three Responses Showed Slope Failure Dangerous

Three friends within my network responded although some I have not been in touch for more than 10 or 20 years ago: 



Eriko of Slope Watch, for example, took the extra mile to provide more information and also assisted in contacting the relevant authorities. She is an experienced NGO activist who cared about slope failure.


All three persons came back with the same conclusion: the slope can fail at any time under the weight of tonnes of rocks, soil and trees. Since the foot of the slope has failed, once it gives way, the entire slope can block the access road.

The only local councillor who acted on this earlier was KC Ng, councillor for Paya Jeras. The local councilllor for this area is Calvin Cheong, appointed by the MP of Damsansara (former, Tony Pua and now, Gobind Singh Deo). 



By Sunday 11 February, 2024, despite one day after KC Ng had informed Ops Pantas @ MPS, no tapes to cordon the area were placed around the slope. It was only placed there on Monday 12 February 2024 after being told to do so at the advice of Eriko of Slope Watch. 




No Response Whatsoever from:

Gobind Singh, Damansara MP: 
Not a single response. Whether he took the initiative to visit the site, it is unknown. Same with the newly elected state assembly person of Bukit Lanjan, YB Gan Pei Ling.

No wonder, before last general election in Nov 2022, some friends told me that Puchong voters also had similar complaints towards Gobind. This is a not a good sign for DAP whose younger members need a good leader to set a good example for them. I shall not say more. Observe for yourself. Read some of the blog posts here and you will see how issues brought to his attention are hardly taken up. 



The same issue of slope failure was also brought up to Ng Suee Lim, state exco in charge of Local Government. There is no response whatsoever from him, or even a show of concern. 

By blocking the people will not help him in his political career. Never think that by being the monkey that sees and hears not, you can still get away when a hill slope occurs. 

One can only wonder why politicians often point fingers at each other AFTER a disaster happen. Like in the case of the Serendah landslide, Minister of Local Government & Development immediately jumped into the conclusion that the camp operators did not have a permit.

Then Selangor State exco Ng Sze Han claimed there were no guidelines for camping sites. What has a landslide to do with the guidelines for camping sites? A landslide or slope failure happens WHEN:

(1) there is earth movement or land clearing on the slope above the camp site 
(2) there is erosion due to weathering 
(3) slope failure due to poor maintenance of slopes and lack of inspection on the integrity of the slopes. 

A lot of work is carried out as a reaction to a disaster. Why should a disaster happen before the politicians and local authorities act? Where is the change of culture? 

If the current batch of leaders in Selangor continue to behave in this manner, there will be no reforms even after 50 years. It is time to change and prove me wrong. 

I have to be critical of DAP and PKR to show that I am serious about reforms in Selangor. After being under PH Selangor, the state has gone from bad to worse during both Azmin Ali and Amiruddin Shaari's era. It is time to change the Menteri Besar and the state exco if they fail to perform.
